ABOUT GERMAN ART BOOKS

An editorial journal for books, images and visual culture.

German Art Books is an independent English-language publication about art books, photography, cinema, publishing and the visual culture of screens.

What we publish

Our articles move between books, photographs, films, exhibitions and digital images. We are interested in how pictures are edited, sequenced, reproduced and remembered — and in the objects and technologies that give those pictures form.

Some stories begin with a single publication. Others begin with a photographer, a film image or a visual idea that has travelled across media. What connects them is a focus on how images work, rather than simply what they show.

Editorial principles

Close looking

We pay attention to sequence, scale, material, composition and context.

Across media

Photography, cinema, publishing and games increasingly share visual references.

Readable criticism

We aim for informed writing without turning every article into an academic paper.

Why the name?

The name German Art Books reflects the site’s roots in art publishing and book culture. Today the publication uses that history as a starting point rather than a boundary, extending its editorial scope into photography, cinema and contemporary visual culture.

A living publication

The archive will grow through essays, visual histories, reviews, notes and selected writing on games and digital culture. Sections may evolve as the publication develops, but the editorial focus remains consistent: images, objects and the ways they acquire meaning over time.
